Tsunami Evacuation Maps

Coastal Communities DISTANT TSUNAMI Evacuation Maps

The following maps define areas in coastal communities that are part of the planned evacuation areas for a DISTANT TSUNAMI only.  The only real credible threat from a distant Tsunami to Gisborne communities is from Chile/Peru with around 11 hours warning.

The communities of Rangitukia, Whangara and Makarori will be totally evacuated so do not need a map.

The primary means of evacuation will be by door knocking supported by emergency services vehicles sirens and PA's.  It is possible that evacutions for a distant event could last for 24 hours.  There are many waves.

LOCAL EVENTS

For a locally generated event i.e. a massive felt earthquake or slow earthquake (one that goes for over a minute) self evacutaion is the only option and you should go at least 1.5 km inland or 35m's above sea level.  It should be safe to return home after an hour.  Generally there are only 2 - 3 waves.
