ROLE OF COUNCIL
Gisborne District Council is a unitary authority vested with the functions of both a territorial authority and a regional council. It is responsible for controlling the impacts of land use and managing natural and physical resources within the district.
Elected councillors:
- set major policy
- make decisions on matters not delegated to committees of the Corporate Management Team
- appoint and monitor the performance of the Chief Executive
- approve contracts over $500,000
- determine committee structure, membership and delegations
- make policy on iwi relationships.
Council meetings are scheduled six-weekly, except during the January recess. Extraordinary meetings may be called to deal with important issues that arise.
Under the Local Government Act 2002, Council is required to produce a Governance Statement within six months of a triennial election.
