MISSION STATEMENT

"To manage and enhance the district’s physical, social, cultural and economic wellbeing efficiently, effectively and equitably.”

ROLE OF COUNCIL

Gisborne District Council is a unitary authority vested with the functions of both a territorial authority and a regional council. It is responsible for controlling the impacts of land use and managing natural and physical resources within the district.

 Elected councillors:

  • set major policy
  • make decisions on matters not delegated to committees of the Corporate Management Team
  • appoint and monitor the performance of the Chief Executive
  • approve contracts over $500,000
  • determine committee structure, membership and delegations
  • make policy on iwi relationships.

Council meetings are scheduled six-weekly, except during the January recess. Extraordinary meetings may be called to deal with important issues that arise.

Under the Local Government Act 2002, Council is required to produce a Governance Statement within six months of a triennial election.
