The style of the Puhoro appearing on our pages is iconic in Maori art. The running scroll pattern is used for ornamenting the hull of a war canoe and depicts the wake a canoe makes when gliding at speed across the water.
The Puhoro is adapted as a pattern of tattooing for the thighs or arms and represents swiftness, strength and courage of character.
It is often found as an ornamental finish on the rafters of a meetinghouse.
Puhoro represents the diligence and determination applied by Council to it’s business. It is also indicative of the serious approach taken, by Council, in it’s community responsibilities.
