INTRODUCTION

The Council has a limited number of units to rent to married and single people, 55 years of age or over with no children or dogs. All units have one bedroom that accommodate one single bed, and the larger bedroom units (twin) accommodate one double bed or two single beds.

Realistic rents are charged and all maintenance of buildings and grounds is the responsibility of the Council.

The advantages of living in a Council flat include:

• realistic rents
• no charge for lawn mowing
• maintenance is always attended to
• no rubbish stickers required
• most units on a regular bus route
• good community spirit generated with other tenants
• units strategically placed in different suburbs.

• 7 twin bedroom units
• Carport facilities
• Rural area - close to Te Karaka township, on bus route, about 20 minute drive to Gisborne.

Elgin

Elgin Court, 184 Lytton Road

• 8 twin bedroom units with carport facilities for some cars.
• On bus route and within walking distance of a shopping centre.

Lytton

Lytton Court, 169 Lytton Road

• 22 single units, 1 twin unit plus 1 unit for a disabled person.
• Library books for tenants' use are supplied by HB Williams Memorial Library.
• On bus route and within walking distance of a shopping centre.

Mangapapa

Awhina Court, 1 Ayton Street

• 14 single bedroom units.
• Community room and library books available for tenants’ use.
• Close to a food market and bus stop.
• 6-8 minute drive to city centre.

Rangimarie Court, 2 Hospital Road

• 13 single bedroom units.
• Community room and library books available.
• Bus stop immediately outside units.
• 5 minute drive to city centre.

Central City

Attlee Place, Carnarvon Street

• 5 larger units.
• Twin bedrooms.
• Lock up garages available with some units.
• No community room.

Kaiti

• 6 single bedroom units.
• No community room.
• 10 minute walk to city.

Craig Court, 15 Craig Road

• 8 single bedroom units.
• No community room.
• Close to Kaiti Mall Shopping Centre, about 5 minutes drive to city centre.

• 12 single and twelve twin bedroom units.
• Community room with library books available.
• Close to Kaiti Mall and De Lautour Rd shopping centres. About 5 minute drive to city centre

Frances Gregory Court, 20 Jackson Street

• 10 single and 1 twin bedroom units.
• Community room with library books available.
• Walking distance to Kaiti Mall Shopping Centre.

A bond of $200, plus two weeks rent in advance must be paid when a tenancy begins.

HOW DO I APPLY?

To apply for a Council unit, either download the application form below, or pick one up from Council's Fitzherbert Street office (remember that Council units are only available to married and single people 55 years of age or over with no children or dogs).

Once you have completed the form, ring Council to arrange an interview. The interview is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. You should submit your application form during the interview.

Due to high demand for a limited number of units, there is often a waiting period before a unit becomes available.

HEALTHY HOMES

The Healthy Homes Project aims to provide district residents with healthier and more energy-efficient homes. Residents with houses built before 1977 can apply for a full or part–subsidised Healthy Homes Package valued at $2400 a home.

This includes a home energy check, under floor insulation, hot-water cylinder wrap, draft exclusion around doors and windows, ceiling insulation, polythene moisture barrier, hot water pipe-lagging.
