Busy team protects billion dollar assets
Keep an eye out for the newly-uniformed Land Rivers and Coastal Operations team. It’s their job to protect the community, land and property from the effects of flooding and coastal erosion. The Waipaoa Flood Control Scheme alone protects $1-$2 billion of assets.
The team, which fluctuates between 9-11 staff, covers a huge area – 68km of stopbanks, 277km of land drains and 303km of rivers and streams.
Winter is busy ensuring streams and rivers are kept free of weeds, willows and debris; spring is willow pole planting and willow layering – chainsawing part way through large willows and pushing them over so the branches touch the ground and eventually form roots and new trees; and with summer comes the spraying to ensure that weed growth is kept down.
The team also does some maintenance on the Taruheru, Waimata and Waikanae rivers, and maintenance and coastal protection repair work at Wainui Beach.
