Councillors to complete cultural tikanga training
Gisborne District Council councillors will soon begin cultural tikanga training.
Yesterday Council approved the engagement of cultural educators Glenis Philip-Barbara and Dr Wayne Ngata to run a one-day workshop with councillors.
The Tairawhiti Cultural Futures programme is designed to achieve active awareness of race relations, build a deeper understanding of how those relationships work in culturally diverse communities and their effect on decision making.
The programme provides practical tools to ensure equitable decision-making.
After the workshop there will be three one-hour follow up meetings to revisit the application of workshop tools.
Glenis Philip-Barbara and Dr Wayne Ngata both have experience in educational leadership, Māori language revitalisation and Tairāwhiti marae knowledge and practice.
Further training to strengthen the understanding and use of Council’s Code of Conduct will be held but is yet to be arranged.
