Cycleway connecting communities
Work is well underway on the second stage of the Wainui cycleway.
The 1.6km $1.7m extension is fully funded by New Zealand Transport Authority and will take the cycleway along Wainui Road (SH35) towards town, past Kaiti School and across the road to Craig Road. Tairawhiti Road general manager Dave Hadfield expects it to be completed by the end of July.
With the necessary property acquisitions finalised, the project entered procurement phase with the tender advertised in December, and closing today (30 January). Contractors are expected to take 100 days to complete the work.
Dave thanked the team at Eastland Network for reorganising their schedule to ensure the power was put underground outside Kaiti School before the new term started.
“The team at Tairawhiti Roads are really excited to finally deliver this project to the community,” said Dave. “It will be a great asset for our district.”
And designs are already underway for the next stage to Gisborne city, which will go along Rutene Road and through to the Gladstone Road Bridge clip on.
