Elections

Local body and district health board elections take place on Saturday 9 October 2010. 

Timetable of key dates

Candidate nominations open.  Roll open for inspection.
Friday 23 July
Candidate nominations closed Friday 20 August at 12 noon.  See nominations
Delivery of voting documents Friday 17 September - Wednesday 22 September
Voting period open.  Special voting opens.
Friday 17 September - Saturday 9 October at 12 noon
Voting closes at 12 noon.  Election day (preliminary results) Saturday 9 October
Declaration of final results Wednesday 13 October - Wednesday 20 October

The local authority elections are your chance to have a say in decisions the council and health board make that affect us all.  You will need to be enrolled to be ale to vote in the election.  For information on how to enrol.

You will be able to vote for the election of:

  • Mayor - the mayor is elected by all the district's voters
  • Councillors - 14 councillors to be elected from the district's 7 wards. These are:
    • Cook ward - 1 councillor
    • Gisborne ward - 8 councillors
    • Matakaoa ward - 1 councillor
    • Taruheru-Patutahi ward  - 1 councillor
    • Uawa ward - 1 councillor
    • Waiapu ward  - 1 councillor
    • Waikohu ward  - 1 councillor
  • Tairawhiti District Health Board - 7 members (only electors ordinarily resident in the Gisborne district can vote for health board members).

Gisborne District Council currently uses the First-Past-the-Post (FPP) electoral system.   The electoral system used for all district health board elections is the Single Transferable Vote (STV).
