People, not dogs, the problem

You would think dogs would be the biggest challenge for animal control team leader Ross Hannam, but no ... it’s people.

He has headed the section for 14 months. An animal-lover at heart, he says the rehoming they manage of impounded dogs is most certainly the best part of the job, and they’re on track to rehome around 150 this year.

He and his team have around 350 call-outs each month, with 100 dogs impounded. They're figures he would love to see drop, but it all starts with education.

“People are the biggest challenge for us,” he says. “It's about education of the owners. It's something that's going to be a long process and needs to start at school level.”

The aim of his team is simple.

“We try and keep the streets of Gisborne safe for the community. By keeping roaming and aggressive dogs off the streets we're making it safer for people and their dogs.”

The team also deal with wandering stock and microchip dogs for the public.
