Pool fencing

Pools must be fenced in accordance with the Swimming Pool Fencing Act 1987.   The only exempted domestic pools are :

  • pools that contain less than 400mm of water; or
  • freestanding pools with walls 1200mm above all surrounding ground.  There must be no ladders or any objects within 1200mm of the side.

All swimming pools are required to be fenced regardless of when they were installed. 
The fence must be at least 1200mm high at all points measured from the ground outside the pool area.  Any gap under the fence must be no more than 100mm and any horizontal rails must be at least 900mm apart.

Checklist for fencing a pool 

  • Is the fence at least 1.2m high
  • Fence palings vertical
  • No gaps greater than 100mm in the fencing
  • Gates open outwards
  • Gate latches are self locking
  • Steps removed when pool is not in use
  • Does the pool surround have a non-slip surface
  • First Aid kit available
  • Pool chemicals stored safely
  • Safety signage
