Popular route safer for future
Those who enjoy walking and jogging over Barkers Hill (top of Ballance Street to Shelley Road) will soon have a safer route to traverse.
Work on the popular site has started and will see the road widened and a new 400m footpath installed. It's scheduled to be finished by late April.
Tairawhiti Roads capital manager Alexios Kavallaris says the $560k project it will be a big improvement to a high pedestrian traffic area that until now, has had no safety provisions.
Included in the works will be stormwater installation with catch sumps and discharge points, installation of a new retaining wall.
People are asked to be careful around the work area.
“Traffic management will be on site and the road will remain open, please take care when driving through the area paying attention to signage and traffic controllers.”
