Rain forces sewer discharge

Friday 14 April - the emergency valves were closed at 7am and the discharges have ceased.

Although the wastewater discharge was highly diluted with rain water, we advise no swimming, fishing or shellfish gathering from the rivers and The Cut, for at least 5 days or until the temporary warning signs have been removed.

Thursday 13 April

The city wastewater system has been flooded due to heavy rain and we've opened the emergency sewer valves at Gladstone Road/Wainui Rd, Oak St, Russel St and Derby St into the Taruheru, Waimata and Turanganui rivers at approximately 6.15pm. Other valves may also be opened as the storm progress into the night.

The wastewater is highly diluted with rain water, but there may be a risk to health for river users.

The Medical Officer of Health has been notified, and we're notifying water user and sports groups.Warning signs will be installed at swimming and recreation sites in the morning.

We will advise when the discharge as stopped.
