Response to statement regarding barging facility at Hicks Bay
We've received lots of enquiries and would like to clarify the recent statement by Minister Shane Jones.
A proposal for a log barging facility at Wharekahika (Hicks Bay) has not yet been discussed between government and Council.
Council has been consulting widely on Tairawhiti 2050 – our plan for developing our region over the next 30 years.
We have been talking to tangata whenua, industry, organisations and communities to determine the aspirations for Tairawhiti in the future.
The plan will guide future development and decision-making for Council and many other organisations in the region.
While the plan is still being finalised in consultation with the community, it outlines 8 key outcomes we hope to achieve together - including a safe and integrated transport network for our businesses and communities.
Any initiative for developing a port or alternative freight on the East Coast would need to take into account this outcome. It would require substantial engagement to ensure the concerns of the community are addressed.
