Safety key for summer fire permits

The region is quickly turning tinder dry and principal rural fire officer Ray Dever is keen to remind everyone to stay safe.

“We’ll probably be looking at a total fire ban by mid December,” says Ray, who oversees all urban and rural fire permits.

Permits are required for any cooking fires – that includes hangi, umu, and charcoal barbecues. Gas barbecues do not require a permit.

“Gisborne goes into summer mode and people love to open all the windows and doors, but that can go pear-shaped if your neighbour has a smoky fire going. We encourage people to think of others and be responsible. 99% of people are just that, but there is always that 1% who aren’t.”

For a permit request for an urban/city location.
