Sand extraction

Taking sand to fill a sandpit is allowed at Midway Beach, from the 'green light' navigational beacon to the Waipaoa River mouth. Up to one trailer load is allowed. You need to contact us prior to removing the sand.

The requirements are:

  • the sand is removed from below the high water mark - (mean high water springs)
  • no vegetation is removed or damaged during, or as a result of sand extraction
  • the sand is taken in an even manner and is not excavated beyond 500mm depth from the natural sand surface
  • you contact Council prior to the extraction of any sand. We require your contact details and the day and volume to be taken. (We keep a record in case we receive a complaint)

Any sand extraction of more than 2 cubic metres over any 12 month period requires a shingle permit.
