The Cenotaph Restoration

The CenotaphThe Cenotaph is a significant gathering place for commemorative services and is registered Category 1 with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

What we plan to do

The Gisborne Cenotaph was damaged in the December 2007 earthquake and has yet to be repaired.

While Council’s insurers have been deciding on how to repair and strengthen the Cenotaph, some people want a complete rebuild. Council will start repairing and strengthening the Cenotaph in 2012/13 at the insurer’s expense ($240,000) and work with those interested in a complete rebuild to confirm how this can be done. A full restoration would cost about $1.9million and would have to be funded through grants.
