Traffic disruptions from road and pipe work

13 Jan 2012

Gisborne District Council’s programme to maintain our roads and replace old wastewater pipes is in full swing. Road users may face some delays.

More room for parking and a cycle lane is being incorporated into the reconstruction of Childers Road between Stanley Road and Disraeli Street. The kerb, channelling and footpaths were removed and repaired before Christmas. Contractors are now removing the weakened asphalt layers and replacing them with a better quality basecourse. Cement will be added and the road resurfaced with new asphalt.

The work in this busy area by the YMCA and Gisborne Intermediate is likely to be completed in the next two weeks - in time for the start of the school year.

In the meantime parking restrictions are in place and road users should expect some delays.

Further down Childers Road opposite Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Council’s upgrade of wastewater pipes has been completed but the road still needs sealing. “A temporary seal was put down prior to Christmas so that the roads were clear while the city was busy with extra visitors,” says wastewater team leader Helen Churton. “Childers Road will be resealed and earlier work in Queens Road will be completed in the next couple of weeks. There may be some disruption to traffic while this is done.”

“The last pipe replacement project of the season began in Haronga Road on Thursday. The pipes go right through the centre of the road so residents will have big holes in the middle of their road and one lane to access their properties. The pipes were installed at the beginning of the last century so they are definitely due for replacement. Neighbours have been advised that the work would be happening this month. It is likely to take about eight weeks.

Other road works scheduled include installing kerb and channel along Douglas Street and Frances Street in Wainui. The edge of the seal is breaking up due to vehicles driving over the lip. “If we don’t do anything about it the road will become potholed along the sides,” said land transport manager Dave Hadfield. “This work will start before the end of the month and is likely to take about six weeks.”

“Reconstruction of Ormond Road between Vogel Street (by the Marina) and McLean Street and between Wi Pere Street and Mangapapa Road will begin in early February. These sections of road have reached the end of their useful life. The road is cracking and developing wheel ruts. This affects the ride through the intersections and the safety of road users. The top layer will be removed and replaced with a better basecourse and new surface. Road markings with be changed to include a cycle lane. This work will take about six weeks. There will be parking restrictions in place, and some disruption to traffic. Nearby residents and businesses may notice extra noise and dust although all efforts will be taken to minimise this.

Gisborne District Council apologises for any disruption to road users.
