Tsunami Warning for Gisborne
6.00am Gisborne and East Coast residents are warned this morning to stay off all the district beaches and out of the sea. This warning from Gisborne Civil Defence is the result of an 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile at 7pm last night. A wave of less than 1 metre is expected to reach East Cape at 7.54am and just before 8am in Gisborne.
Waves are expected to continue for between 6 and 12 hours. Civil Defence controller Jon Davies says there is no need for panic.
"Any one required to be moved from low lying land will be contacted by emergency services or civil defence."
This warning will stay in place until at least 4pm unless other wise advised.
