Urban Development Strategy

The strategy is intended to provide direction for other plans relating to the Gisborne urban area, such as council's Resource Management Act Plans and the Community Plan. Through these it would influence how council spends its money, development of landuse regulation and policy, and council's future work programme. Implementation of the strategy would also be dependent on other stakeholders.

Gisborne Urban Development Strategy  Adopted May 2009  30 pages 3310kb

The types of things that the strategy addresses include :

  • Redevelopment directions for the city.
  • The promotion of quality design.
  • Celebrating the cultural landscape in the urban environment.
  • Making better use of public spaces and natural landscape features.
  • Improving connectivity through the city.
  • Building confidence in the 'brand' Gisborne.
