Young musicians benefit from Creative Communities funding

Do you have a creative project that just needs some funding to get off the ground? Applications are invited from all arts based individuals and groups for funding from the Creative Communities Scheme. A Creative New Zealand initiative administered by Gisborne District Council, the scheme encourages art focused projects that have broad community involvement.

One successful recipient from the last round of Creative Communities funding was the New Zealand Concert Bands Association. The funding enabled them to bring their 2012 Seniors Band together in Gisborne. They ran a workshop with 7 selected young, local musicians and the 40 senior concert band musicians from across New Zealand. The workshop, held over a weekend, was an opportunity for sharing knowledge and developing skills under the directorship of John Snowling. It was invaluable for both the local young people involved and the Seniors Band members. The beauty and experience of music was celebrated with a concert at the end of the workshop. Those who attended the concert enjoyed a fantastic display by a variety of skilled musicians.

Applications are considered by local people with knowledge and experience of the arts in the Gisborne region. The assessment group looks for opportunities to support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of our region and projects that encourage young people to get involved in a creative activity.

There are only a couple of weeks left to get applications in. Council must receive the application by 5pm on Friday 31st August. “The fund is a significant contributor to local arts with about $12,500 available twice a year. Council’s website has information about the types of activities or projects that might be funded and also what can’t be funded,” says community development officer Barbara Dockley. “If someone has a good idea but wants to run it pass someone; I am here to help. I can also assist people to complete the application form if they contact me before the closing date. At the moment we have not received any applications.”

Here's the application form, it's also available from customer service in Fitzherbert Street.
