The Peel Street toilets will be closed from tomorrow so the building can be earthquake strengthened.
Council Liveable Communities Director Michele Frey says some car parks outside China Palace will be unavailable for Thursday and Friday this week while the area is fenced off.
“There will be no impact to traffic or pedestrians along Peel Street however we have spoken to business owners who will be impacted by the loss of carparks over these two days.
“We have also made the Bright Street toilets free for the public to use while the Peel Street facilities are closed.”
Ms Frey says the building in the middle of Peel Street will have the internal electrical and plumbing stripped out before the strengthening can start.
“In early June we anticipate there will be partial road closures on Peel Street while deliveries are made to the work site however we do not anticipate these closures will last for more than half a day at a time.”
After the work has been completed, one toilet will be available at the Peel Street location.
“The refit of the rest of the building will require external funding and this is something that will be worked on in the long term.”
The Bright Street facility is open from 8:30-5pm, Saturday 9am-12 noon and will be free of charge while the Peel Street toilets are not operational.
