Rubbish and recycling collection
For the city and Poverty Bay Flats collection, contractors Waste Management NZ Ltd will collect kerbside rubbish and recycling as normal on public holidays.
Please put your rubbish and recycling at the kerbside before 7am on collection days.
Extra recyclables at the kerbside must be in a approved council bin and only 2 bins per household. Or take extra recyclables to the transfer station.

City transfer station
Waste Management Ltd NZ recycling and transfer station, Innes Street.
Recycling drop off centre is open 24/7.
Recycle plastic grade 1, 2 and 5, glass bottles, cans, paper and cardboard.
Foil wrapping paper cannot be recycled. Please don't separate recycling by putting items into plastic bags.
Rural transfer stations
Opening days are extended for Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Te Puia Springs and Te Araroa between Monday 14 December to 15 January.

Alcohol ban areas
There are temporary alcohol ban areas during the Rhythm & Vines and Good Vibes festivals.

Jet ski permit
Before using a jet ski in the Gisborne district, you need to register the jet ski with us and display a unique number. This also applies to visitors to our district. There’s no charge to register your craft.

Alcohol licences
Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act there's a statutory 'shut down' period for alcohol licensing nationwide where applications are not processed. This period begins Friday 20 December and ends Wednesday 15 January.
Special Licence for events planned up until the end of February - applications had to be lodged by 20 November or at least 20 working days before your event. Contact us for special circumstances.
Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, weekends, statutory holidays and the days between 20 December and 15 January inclusive are not working days.

Building consent application
Under the Building Act building consent processing stops 5pm Friday 18 December and restarts 8am Monday 11 January.

Under the Resource Management Act consent processing stops 5pm Friday 18 December and restarts 8am Monday 11 January.

If you need a consent in time for Christmas to early February, the application needed to be lodged before 18 November.
Land Information Memorandum – LIM
LIM applications will not be processed from Friday 18 December to Friday 8 January.
The latest a LIM application can be received for the year is 9am Friday 4 December
