Marina car park closed to campers
The marina car park is no longer a permitted freedom camping area and in the first week since the closure took effect, it seems campers are sticking to the rules.
In September Council agreed on the temporary closure of the area for the 2019/2020 summer season. This followed complaints that freedom camping in the car park was having an adverse impact on public access, amenity, user safety and the environment.
Council is taking a phased approach to implement the closure, starting with signage followed by monitoring and enforcement from mid-November.
A dedicated compliance and monitoring officer will visit the car park daily to enforce the closure if necessary. Members of the public should contact council if they have any concerns.
A comprehensive study of Council’s camping management approach is underway, with a full bylaw review planned for next year.
