Under the Tairawhiti Resource Management Plan (TRMP), special rules apply when applying for a water permit in the Poverty Bay Flats or Waipaoa Catchment.
Fully or over-allocated water sources
Water sources in these areas are fully or over-allocated, especially during the irrigation season. This means that more water has been consented than is physically available under the new allocation limits set in the Freshwater Plan. The affected sources include>
- Te Arai River
- Waipaoa River and its tributaries
- Makauri Aquifer
- Matokitoki Aquifer
- Te Hapara Sands Aquifer
- Waipaoa Shallow Fluvial Aquifer
- Waipaoa Gravels Aquifer
