Dog exercise areas

You can exercise your dog in the following areas around Gisborne city and Wainui. You must keep your dog under control at all times in a public place. Please don't forget to pick up your dog's droppings.

Dogs must be on a leash

Dog owners must have their dogs on a leash at all times in a public place within the city area (defined as the reticulated boundary) that's not designated as an off-leash or prohibited area. Dogs in Titirangi Domain and Waihirere Domain are also required to be on a leash.

Dog friendly exercise areas - no leash

You can exercise your dog without a leash as long as you keep them under continuous supervision and control.

  • Ayton Park
  • Beach and foreshore - Stanley Road to Waipaoa River
  • Coldstream Reserve
  • Heath Johnston Park - Paraone Road end
  • Nelson Park - adjacent the footbridge
  • Wainui Beach - except between the flags
  • Waiteata Park - north side of the waterway, non-playground side
  • Whataupoko Reserve

Dogs are prohibited in the following areas in the Gisborne district.

15. Railway Reserve 16. Alfred Cox Skateboard Park
17. Victoria Domain 18. Heath Johnston Park (Wainui Road end)
19. Waikanae to Midway beaches - The Cut to Roberts Road 20. Rugby Park
21. Kaiti Mall 22. Anzac Park
23. Gisborne Airport 24. Kaiti Beach and dunes up to the road
25. Nelson Park sports fields - excludes surrounding area 26. Waikirikiri Reserve  sports fields - excludes surrounding area
