Air quality monitoring in Gisborne
Air quality is monitored using equipment that measures fine particles known as PM10. The monitoring station is located at Gisborne Boys' High School in Stanley Road.
The national environmental standard for PM10 is:
- 50 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3) over a 24-hour period.
An exceedance happens when PM10 levels go above this limit.
Why exceedances happen
Air quality exceedances in Gisborne city are usually linked to a combination of:
- cold winter weather
- calm or low wind conditions
- emissions from domestic wood burners
- transport‑related emissions
These conditions can cause smoke and fine particles to build up near the ground instead of dispersing.
