Outcome of periodic review of designation s133BG Building Act

Gisborne District Council gives public notice that it has completed the required 90-day review of the designation for the whole Tairāwhiti region under section 133BG of the Building Act 2004.

On 27 January 2026, the whole Tairāwhiti region was designated under the Building Act 2004 to help manage ongoing risks to people from buildings affected by land instability and flooding following the severe weather event on 21-22 January 2026.

The designation must be reviewed every 90 days to determine whether it is still needed.

The first review of the designation was due by 27 April 2026.  On 23 April 2026, the Mayor of Gisborne District Council determined that the designation is still needed and will remain in place unaltered.

The designation may remain in place until 26 January 2029, unless terminated earlier and is subject to review at least every 90 days.
