The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund helps subsidise travel for rural junior teams aged 5 - 19 years, supporting schools and club sports teams on local competitions.
There are 2 funding rounds each year for winter and summer sports codes.
- Winter codes - applications close 5pm on the last Friday in April.
- Summer codes - applications close 5pm on the 2nd Friday in November.
Applications are only accepted from rural areas, this excludes Gisborne city.
Assessment criteria
The grant supports travel costs for junior teams participating in local, regular sports competitions.
Please note: this fund does not cover travel to regional or national events.
Eligible teams include:
- School sports teams competing in regular local weekend competitions, this excludes inter-school and intra-school matches held during school hours,
- Sports club teams participating in organised, regular competitions through club membership outside of school time.
Selection process
Applications are reviewed by a local committee, consisting of Council staff and a Sports Gisborne Tairāwhiti representative. The committee brings valuable insight into the challenges faced by rural sports teams, ensuring fair and informed decision-making.
