New Trustee to Trust Tairāwhiti

26 June 2026

Council confirms the appointment of John Rae as a Trustee of Trust Tairāwhiti for a 3-year term effective from 1 July 2026.

Deputy Mayor Aubrey Ria says Council was pleased to confirm Mr Rae’s appointment making a unanimous decision following a robust recruitment and selection process.

Under the Trust Deed, Gisborne District Council is responsible for appointing trustees to Trust Tairāwhiti. Consistent with those responsibilities, Council engaged an independent recruitment agency to support the appointment process.

“Mr Rae brings extensive governance and executive leadership experience, significant commercial acumen, strategic insight and a strong understanding of the region,” says Ms Ria.

“Council is confident his breadth of experience and regional perspective will make a valuable contribution to the stewardship of Trust Tairāwhiti and to advancing its purpose for the benefit of current and future beneficiaries.”

Mr Rae has held numerous governance and chairing roles across the public, private, Crown, iwi and regional development sectors.

His current governance portfolio includes chairing Crown Regional Holdings Limited, Pāmu/Landcorp, Gisborne Holdings Limited, Midlands Funds Management Limited, Cambridge Clothing Limited and Wood Engineering Gisborne Limited. He also has extensive governance experience across infrastructure, economic development, iwi and commercial organisations.

The appointment process requires existing trustees to retire by rotation every three years, and follows the completion of the term for Trustee David Battin.

Deputy Mayor Ria says that the Gisborne District Council acknowledges and appreciates Mr Battin’s many contributions to the Trust both in the capacity as a trustee and as the Trust Chair.

“Trust Tairāwhiti plays an important role in supporting the wellbeing and the overall economic prosperity of our region, and we acknowledge the time, commitment and leadership David has given to that mahi.”

She also thanked all candidates who took part in the process.

“We appreciate the calibre of people who put themselves forward. Governance roles like this are important for our region, and Council takes its responsibilities under the Trust Deed seriously.”

Council looks forward to continuing a constructive and positive relationship with Trust Tairāwhiti Trustees and Chief Executive in serving the interests of the Trust’s beneficiaries.
