Gisborne District Council has re-appointed incumbent Chief Executive, Nedine Thatcher Swann to continue tenure as head of the organisation.
Mayor Rehette Stoltz says that following an external recruitment programme and rigorous interview process, the Council has resolved to appoint Ms Thatcher Swann back in the role.
“The calibre of applicants was extremely high, however Nedine has demonstrated transformational leadership and outstanding management throughout some of the most significant challenges that our region has faced.
“Council believes it will be essential that her experienced and stable leadership continues, as this will be vital to enable the Council to deliver on its recovery plan for the next three years.
“Nedine has successfully led the organisation to achieve its programme of extensive regional and territorial responsibilities, innovatively and sustainably, while navigating the organisation through several emergency events and recovery efforts.
“In her tenure as Chief Executive, she has championed transformative changes in mindsets, operating models, priorities, investments and leadership that have enabled collaborative relationships and progressive steps toward stronger Tiriti partnerships for the Council.
“Nedine’s skillset is an incredibly valuable asset and will serve our community well as we forge ahead with the immense work programme for 2024 and beyond.”
Having served nearly seven years, Ms Thatcher Swann says she’s extremely pleased and energized to be remaining in the role for a further five years.
“It’s my privilege to continue to serve our Council and our community in supporting our region to heal.
“The next few years will be demanding, both financially and in terms of delivering on our significant recovery programme, alongside the vital services Council provides to the community.
“I am committed to ensuring the people of Tairāwhiti are at the heart of everything we do as we navigate this and our future challenges and opportunities.”
Ms Thatcher Swann is of Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga a Hauiti and Ngai Tamanuhiri descent.
After holding numerous senior roles (at national and regional levels) that span from crown research, to social development and education, Nedine joined Gisborne District Council in 2009, bringing extensive experience in strategic planning, organisational and programme management.
Nedine was in the role of Group Manager of Community Planning and Development for eight years before becoming Chief Executive in 2017.
Ms Thatcher Swann had completed the maximum term of employment permitted under the Local Government Act of seven years (five years with two-year extension). The role was required to be re-advertised this year.
Council’s CE appointment process was externally managed by Local Government New Zealand, subject to the Local Government Act.
The Council wished to thank the four other candidates for their interest and participation in the process.
