The way we manage waste affects our environment, our communities and future generations. The plan focuses on making waste services simpler and fairier, increasing reuse and resource recovery, reducing waste to landfill and illegal dumping and supporting rural communities.

Making better choices about waste
The waste hierarchy is a guide for managing waste in the best way possible. It encourages us to avoid creating waste in the first place, reuse and repair items, recycle materials back into use and only send waste to landfill as a last resort.

Council is committed to improving waste services across Tairāwhiti by working with communities, businesses, mana whenua and other partners to reduce waste, increase resource recovery and make sustainable choices easier for everyone
2024-2027 Three Year Plan funding
We're committed to improving how we manage waste - reducing its impact on people and the environment and supporting communities and businesses to minimise waste wherever possible. Every step towards smarter waste solutions helps lower disposal costs for ratepayers and creates healthier outcomes for all.
$11.6M external funding, $1.4M Council funding - $13M total funding to deliver key waste initiatives:
Resource Recovery Centre (RRC)
Phase 2 of the RRC study will focus on design and construction - confirming sites, costs, structures, and operational opportunities. This includes:
- final site due diligence
- high-level concept design
- operating models and site selection will be presented to Council for consideration.
Community engagement and education
We're continuing programmes that promote waste education and behaviour changes. The WMMP will guide targeted initiatives to address district-wide challenges including:
- workshops and community events
- the EnviroSchools programme
- partnerships with local organisations and businesses.
We'll also share data on waste and recycling volumes to build community awareness and support informed change.
