Gisborne District Council is asking everyone to be mindful of water use as we head into the warmer months.
Drinking Water Manager Judith Robertson said while the Mangapoike supply dams are currently at good levels for this time of year, river flows across the district are reducing due to very little rain in the catchments.
“Our water supply relies heavily on rainfall to replenish the Mangapoike dams. If we don’t get regular rain, our water supply can become vulnerable.
“We all need to do our part and avoid wasting water.”
Council is closely monitoring water demand and supply leading up to Christmas. If dry conditions continue, water restrictions may be introduced to help manage demand and protect sources.
“If river levels drop too low, we can’t take water for treatment and then the community is solely dependent on the dams,” said Ms Robertson.
The latest water situation report shows two consecutive months of below-normal rainfall across most of the region, with river flows trending below normal.
Residents are encouraged to make small changes now to help reduce demand.
“Every little bit helps,” says Ms Robertson. “Turn off the tap while brushing teeth, shorten showers and avoid watering gardens in the heat of the day.”
