New street trees for stronger communities

22 August 2025

We’re planting new street trees across our city - and it’s not just for today. It’s for tomorrow.

These trees will help clean our air, cool our streets, reduce flooding, support wildlife, and boost our mental health. They will make our neighbourhoods greener and more beautiful.

Trees are being planted on Aberdeen Road, Potae Avenue, Ranfurly Street and Cambridge Terrace, with more locations to follow. Planting will be completed by the end of August.

We know some residents have concerns - like leaf litter, mowing challenges, or blocked sunlight. We’re listening and working to find the right balance with smart tree choices and careful placement.

Council will care for the trees with regular watering, pruning, and inspections. You can help too if one is planted near you:

  • Give new trees a bucket of water during dry spells
  • Keep mulch shaped like a doughnut, not piled like a volcano
  • Avoid weed killer and mower damage near the trunk

Every tree planted today is a gift to the future. Let’s grow a greener city together.
