Total Mobility

Subsidised taxi fares

The Total Mobility Scheme is a national transport scheme that provides subsidised taxi fares for eligible people with a permanent or short-term impairment that prevents them from safely using public transport.

In Gisborne a 50 percent taxi voucher subsidy applies per trip, up to a maximum fare of $12, of which you would pay $6. You must pay any additional fare over $12.

You can use your taxi vouchers any day of the week – 24 hours a day. You must show your ID card to the taxi driver each time you use a voucher.

Anyone living in the Gisborne region with an impairment that affects their ability to use transport can apply for membership of the Total Mobility Scheme. Eligibility is based on how the disability affects your ability to use transport.  An impairment may be psychological, psychiatric, physical, neurological, intellectual, sensory or other.

Fill in the application form, you need to take it to your doctor or specialist to complete the eligibility assessment on the form.

Once it’s filled in, bring the form in to customer service and staff will take your photo for your ID card.  Your application will be processed and your ID card and taxi vouchers will be posted to you within 10 working days.

When you run out of vouchers – you can either:

  • bring your used voucher book in to customer service to swap it for a new book. There’s no charge for replacement vouchers.
  • you can get someone else to get the vouchers for you.  They will need to bring your used voucher book and show your ID card.

If your ID card has expired, you need to talk to our total mobility coordinator who will confirm your status as permanent or temporary.
