Council is wanting feedback on what the community’s priorities are for maintaining and improving the region’s transport network.
Council has developed a draft Mode Shift Plan and Active Travel Strategy and is also reviewing the Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) along with the Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP).
Council Director Sustainable Futures Jo Noble said the plans set out the way Council and central government intend to invest in activities ranging from maintaining and replacing existing roads and footpaths, state highway improvements, road safety, to walking and cycling and public transport.
“We’re required by legislation to review the RLTP and the RPTP this year.
“We’re making some changes due to the significant mahi needed to recover from the weather events we’ve had over the last few years, and we also want to improve our public transport and active transport services and networks.”
Most investment over the next 10 years is targeted at looking after Council’s existing road network and improving the State Highways but there is also a focus on encouraging people to use other modes of transport to get around the city and townships.
“It’s not just about getting people on a bike. It’s about providing a transport system that’s accessible and safer for all our community.”
“We’re looking at increasing the frequency of bus services, new bus routes as well as transport services in rural areas.”
“We believe Tairāwhiti can thrive if we have a range of choices about how we get to work, connect with whānau and friends, and access services.”
Consultation starts 2 February and closes 4pm Thursday 29 February.
